What is Stevia Guideline In Canada?

Guidelines and regulations for stevia in Canada

According to Health Canada Sugar Substitutes section Purified stevia extract is regulated as a food additive in Canada.  It has undergone a full safety review and has been approved for use in various foods sold in Canada. Purified stevia extract, however, is prepared in a manner that results in a highly concentrated (minimum 95%) extract of steviol glycosides. The conditions of use for purified stevia extracts are found under "steviol glycosides" on the List of Permitted Sweeteners.

On November 30, 2012 Health Canada's Food Directorate modified the List of Permitted Sweeteners to enable the use of steviol glycosides as a sweetener in certain food categories. For more information on steviol glycosides (stevia) and its permitted uses, please see the Notice of Modification to the List of Permitted Sweeteners to Enable the Use of Steviol Glycosides as a Table-Top Sweetener and as a Sweetener in Certain Food Categories.

Revised Guidelines for the Use of Stevia in Natural Health Products

On September 18, 2009 Based on a review of the international regulation of Stevia rebaudiana and the clinical evidence for safety and efficacy, the Natural Health Products Directorate has adopted the following guidelines for the use of Stevia and steviol glycosides in Natural Health Products (NHPs). The revised recommendation for the maximum limit for steviol glycosides in NHPs is in accordance with the full ADI (acceptable daily intake) of 4 mg steviol/kg body weight established by the Joint Expert Committee on Food Additives (JECFA) of the Food and Agriculture Organization and the World Health Organization in June, 2008 (JECFA 2008).
